Vander Plaats won the debate but never landed the damaging blow to Branstad

Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats had one clear objective for the first of three Republican gubernatorial debates on Wednesday: Take down his chief rival, Terry Branstad. And while he managed to land several shots to the former governor, he never achieved the game-changing moment his campaign needed.

The most direct confrontation of the afternoon came during a discussion of same-sex marriage, which shouldn’t be surprising. It’s an issue that has caused division in Republican ranks, with the influential Christian organization Iowa Family Policy Center using it [as] their motivation to sit out the fall campaign if Branstad is the party’s nominee.

Homosexuality and Military Leadership at US Merchant Marine Academy
Brett Edward Stout will discuss the topic of homosexuality and military leadership at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on April 13th, 2010. This will be the first time that this topic has ever been openly discussed at the Academy. The US Merchant Marine Academy is one of the nation’s most conservative military related schools.

On the US Merchant Marine Academy
Kings Point is a federal service academy, like West Point of Annapolis.  It falls under the Maritime Administration, which is part of the US Department of Transportation.  Its graduates are mostly preparing to serve as officers in the maritime industry.  About one quarter go active military (all branches, including USMC).  Those who don’t are required to take a commission in some reserve component, most often US Naval Reserves.  The midshipmen spend a full year at sea.  They combine a BS degree, Coast Guard unlimited license, and the requirements for commissioning into the remaining three.

On Brett Edward Stout
Author, columnist, and military veteran Brett Edward Stout served 5 years in the US Marine Corps as a Russian Linguist before becoming the Executive Director of the Honolulu Gay and Lesbian Cultural Foundation. In 2008 he published his first novel Sugar-baby Bridge while attending the University of Iowa and currently writes the social-political column “Action Reaction” for ACCESSline, Iowa's LGBT+ Newspaper (http://www.ACCESSlineIOWA.com).

The three Republicans who are running for governor in Iowa gathered at KTIV studios in Sioux City early this afternoon for the first “debate” of the 2010 primary campaign season.  It will air this evening at 7 p.m. on the three NBC affiliates (KTIV, KTTC & KWWL), but was available “live” online at 1 p.m.  What follows is a live blog of the event.

The three candidates had 90 second opening statements.  Former Governor Terry Branstad trotted out a new line: ”Results over rhetoric, that’s what this is all about.”

In 2002, the American Academy of Pediatrics, an association of 60,000 pediatricians, voted to adopt a position in support of gay parents. Six pediatricians who opposed this policy on religious grounds rallied like-minded friends and, on October 19th, about 15 people founded the American College of Pediatricians. It would be accurate to describe this organization as a vehicle through which a small minority of anti-gay doctors advocate in opposition to gay rights, abortion rights, and euthanasia.

According to Focus on the Family’s CitizenLink, at the end of March, the ACP sent out a letter to school superintendents.

Despite the name, ACP is not a institute of higher learning. Nor is it a professional organization for pediatricians. This is an advocacy group dedicated to political goals which is using an authoritative sounding name to fool the unaware.

If he loses June 8 in the GOP gubernatorial primary, Bob Vander Plaats told The National Journal he has no interest in an independent run, although he would not commit to supporting whoever does emerge from the three-way primary.

In a story about the issues former Gov. Terry Branstad has had convincing Iowa’s social and evangelical conservatives to support his campaign for a fifth term as governor, Vander Plaats finally put to rest the idea that he might run as an independent this fall.

Majority say senator's 'pull the plug on grandma' statements embarrass Iowa

Less than half of Iowans say U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, should be re-elected to a sixth term, according to a survey conducted by the polling firm Research 2000.

The poll, released Monday morning to The Iowa Independent, was commissioned by a coalition of three liberal organizations — Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America and Credo Action.

Some things just get better with age. Wine. Cheese. Betty White. And gay marriage in Iowa.

This weekend marks the one-year anniversary of the Iowa State Supreme Court decision, Varnum v. Brien, which legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa. The unanimous decision in Varnum, which said that Iowa's equal protection clause guaranteed the right of gay and lesbian couples to full marriage equality, sent a few shock waves 'round the country. Iowa became the first state outside of the east or west coast to legalize same-sex marriage, and the decision also kickstarted a marriage equality movement that would eventually lead to victories in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine (albeit short-lived), and Washington, D.C.

Still, social conservatives aim to make it an election issue

While the fight to overturn the Iowa Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriage was always considered an uphill battle, many observers felt it would ultimately become a political liability for Democrats during the 2010 elections. But time, polling and electoral success appears to have stiffened their resolve, and with the country in the midst of an economic recession, the issue appears to be on the political backburner.

Case in point is Democratic Gov. Chet Culver.

Prior to the ruling, Culver said he would be willing to call legislators into special session to “do whatever it takes to protect marriage between a man and a woman.” On the day of the court’s decision, Culver released a tepid statement, saying he wanted to review the ruling with the attorney general before “reacting to what it means for Iowa.” It was nearly a week before the governor released a statement saying that while he personally believed marriage was between one man and one woman, he was “reluctant to support amending the Iowa Constitution” to overturn the court’s ruling.

In somewhat of a surprise, no Republicans filed for any of the five Johnson County courthouse offices before today's deadline. That in itself isn't unusual, but this year it looked like the Republicans would field candidates for supervisor.

Lori Cardella, the GOP nominee for supervisor in the January special election, publicly said immediately after her loss to Janelle Rettig that she intended to run again. Even before the appointment-petition-special election chain of events that began with Larry Meyers' death last September, Chad Murphy had announced on the GOP side. And there were also rumors that Edgar Thornton, who applied for the Board vacancy in October, was going to run.
