Terry Branstad showed confidence in his economic-themed campaign for governor in naming like-minded Kim Reynolds his running mate Thursday, observers say.
Still, Reynolds met with general acceptance from strict social conservatives interviewed by The Des Moines Register, including some leading supporters of Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats, Branstad's top rival in the June 8 Republican primary.
Reynolds, a state senator from Osceola and former Clarke County treasurer, brings a fresh face to the ticket and reinforces Branstad's fiscal credentials rather than extending an overt peace offering to those still smarting over primary-campaign differences.
