The stigma attached to being HIV-positive and the pervasive isolation that is a result are two of the most significant and heinous hurdles faced by the HIV/AIDS community.   Through the annual Wellness Summit and peer-to-peer led support groups, PITCH intends to combat these barriers head-on. By providing members and attendees of the summit with information, materials and additional support, we hope to allow those individuals to become more active members of society, thus improving their personal situation as well as influencing and improving society as a whole.

Senators: Program could dump HIV patients (DesMoinesRegister)

An administrator of the state insurance program denies the allegations.

A state program responsible for insuring Iowans with pre-existing health problems is taking actions that at least two lawmakers say will lead to the disenrollment of 13 to 15 HIV-positive patients.

Study: Family ties cut suicide rate for LGBT youth (ChicagoTribune)

As I was talking to Brian Mustanski about his newly released study on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, it occurred to me that most kids who are part of a minority group can rely on support and guidance from parents who are part of the same group.

That's less true, however, for many LGBT adolescents whose parents often — and this doesn't make them bad people — don't have a clue how to help their teens navigate their sexuality and cope with discrimination.

But Andrew Jolivette, an associate professor and department head in American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University, said colleges can help eradicate stigmas by offering more programs and organizations addressing AIDS.

FFBC Speaker Senator Liz Mathis

Our guest speaker on the first Friday of January was the newly elected Democratic senator from Iowa’s 18th District, Liz Mathis.  A former TV anchor in Cedar Rapids [FFBC member and Iowa Senator Matt McCoy introduced her as “the Diane Sawyer of eastern Iowa”], Liz Mathes was the winner in a special election last November to replace Senator Swati Dandekar, who had been appointed to the Iowa Utilities Board.

UI students look to develop gay fraternity on campus (DailyIowan)

A group of University of Iowa students hopes to bring the campus its first gay, bisexual, and progressive fraternity.

Organizers with Delta Lambda Phi are working toward becoming a greek colony at the UI and eventually becoming a fraternity. The new group's leaders say they're currently working on recruiting new members. They say about 15 men on campus have expressed interest.
