A southeast Nebraska woman accused of lying about being raped by four men has made a plea deal with prosecutors.

In a historic first for the Peace Garden State, voters have elected the first openly gay state representative to the North Dakota Legislative Assembly.

LGBT candidates battled in races throughout the city and beyond, and several will be returning to office—or going for the first time.

Democrats used a strong statewide turnout Tuesday to keep control of the Iowa Senate and post gains in the Iowa House that will strengthen their bargaining position with Gov. Terry Branstad and legislative Republicans who will split control of state government for another two years.

An Iowa Supreme Court justice who was among seven justices that ruled unanimously in 2009 to strike down the state’s law banning same-sex marriage won his bid to remain in office on Tuesday.

With 98 percent of precincts reporting, Minnesota marriage amendment supporters had garnered 1,374,189 votes, or 48 percent. That was short of the 50 percent or greater total needed to approve the amendment.

The Central Nebraska Human Rights Coalition (CNHRC) has formed in Grand Island and will host a public meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday at Perkins Restaurant.

The coalition’s mission is to promote equal opportunities and equal rights for all Central Nebraska residents. The coalition formed in response to recent and past actions by the Grand Island City Council, said a written news release from organizers.
