Iowa LGBT News regarding Morals and Values

Editor's Note:

The phrase "Morals and Values" has been used far too often by small segments of society to apply to their own morals and values, but with the implication that other segments of society either do not share certain morals and values, or worse, do not have morals and values.

It is my own belief that our different groups truly have more in common than we have differences.  Love, concern, compassion, safety for ourselves and others, the importance of giving, forgiveness, responsibility, industriousness, freedom, neighborliness... these are but a few of those things we hold to be important in both personally and as a society.

It was my decision to label this secton of our paper "Morals and Values" as a means of encompassing both spiritual and secular beliefs; my intention is a spirit of inclusiveness that I hope will eventually erase fear and division.

The full congregation of Raleigh's Pullen Memorial Baptist Church voted Sunday to prohibit the church pastor from legally marrying anyone until she can legally marry same-sex couples under North Carolina law.

The congregants said in a formal statement that current North Carolina law - and the language proposed for a vote next year on an amendment to the state Constitution - discriminates against same-sex couples "by denying them the rights and privileges enjoyed by heterosexual married couples."

Church ordains Iowa City native Dorothy Whiston on Sunday

A candidate with a resume as colorful as Dorothy Whiston’s would’ve been unlikely to become the pastor of a Baptist church a few decades ago.

Whiston — ordained as the pastor of First Baptist Church on Sunday — has had a hand in a number of denominations throughout her career, including Methodist, Catholic and Evangelical churches.

But for the congregation at FBC, Whiston’s ordination is one of many manifestations of their inclusive attitude; not just with respect to religious backgrounds, but races, cultures, political affiliations, sexual orientations and socio-economic circumstances as well.
