Before interviewing Janeane Garofalo, everybody I mentioned her name to said, “Oh, I love her!”  Most, as I did, recalled her parts in movies, such as Mystery Men, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, or Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.  Which presents a problem, because while she is known for playing deadpan, cynical characters, Janeane Garofalo is quite a different (and far deeper) person than those she has played—read that “been cast as”—in movies.

In advance of her Mission Creek Festival comedy performance with Tig Notaro at The Englert Theatre on April 5, I had the pleasure of chatting with her about what she has done, what she would like to do… and beading.

Oscars snub Iowa film 'Bully' in Best Documentary category (DesMoinesRegister)

The unflinching documentary “Bully,” much of which was filmed in Iowa school buses and hallways, was not among five films nominated this morning for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

The five films that will compete in the category are “5 Broken Cameras,” “The Gatekeepers,” “How to Survive a Plague,” “The Invisible War” and “Searching for Sugar Man.”

Riverside Theatre & Working Group Theatre announce Iowa City reading of Dustin Lance Black’s 8, Nov 15

Riverside Theatre in Collaboration with Working Group Theatre Joins Nationwide Productions of Landmark Marriage Equality Play by Academy Award-Winning Screenwriter of MILK and J. EDGAR.

Iowa City, Iowa – On Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 PM, Riverside Theatre in collaboration with Working Group Theatre, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact, is proud to announce a one-night-only staged reading of “8,” a play chronicling the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8, written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and AFER Founding Board Member Dustin Lance Black.  Twenty-one area actors and community members will participate in the reading.  After the show there will be a talk-back for audience members with State Representative Vicki Lensing and Molly Tafoya of OneIowa (the state's largest LGBT advocacy organization) about the landscape of marriage equality in Iowa and nationally. Following the talk-back, ticket holders will be invited to a lobby reception sponsored by Devotay.

Staged reading of 8 the Play, Nov 15 at Riverside Theatre in Iowa

8Riverside Theatre, in collaboration with Working Group Theatre, is honored to present a staged reading of “8”, a new documentary play by Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar) about the federal case for marriage equality.

“8″ candidly illustrates the historic trial using court transcripts and personal reflections from the 2010 case known as Prop 8, a constitutional amendment that barred same-sex marriage in California. There will be a post-performance talkback to discuss the issues.

Tickets are $15 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Foundation for Equal Rights. To reserve your tickets, call the box office at 319-338-7672.
