Iowa Democrats call on Governor to respond to out-of-touch comments by Republican Party Chair

This morning the Iowa Democratic Party called on Governor Terry Branstad to respond to comments by Republican Party of Iowa Chair AJ Spiker on Iowa Press this weekend where he said theirs is the party of One Man, One Woman marriage, and believes Iowans should vote on a discriminatory constitutional amendment banning marrige equality in Iowa.

"Governor Branstad is the head of Republican Party in this state and his party chair declared theirs is the party of one man, one woman marriage," said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rep. Tyler Olson. "Governor Branstad needs to tell Iowans whether he agrees with his party's chairman on whether the Republican Party should continue to exclude those who believe in equal protection under the law."

Spiker's comments demonstrate the continued problems the Republican Party has connecting with voters.  Recent polls on marriage equality show a majority of Iowans oppose a constitutional amendment and in 2012 national polls showed a majority of Americans support marriage equality.

"This is just another example of Iowa Republicans living in the past," said Olson.  "Iowa Democrats are focused on the issues that are important in Iowans' daily lives such as job creation, educational opportunity and expanding access to health care. While Republicans may be looking backward Democrats will not stop moving forward."
