The unflinching documentary “Bully,” much of which was filmed in Iowa school buses and hallways, was not among five films nominated this morning for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
The five films that will compete in the category are “5 Broken Cameras,” “The Gatekeepers,” “How to Survive a Plague,” “The Invisible War” and “Searching for Sugar Man.”
A new Oscar spotlight for “Bully” would have followed a year in which the film already had helped focus attention on bullying and harassment in schools as social epidemics too long ignored. Its release last spring also coincided with the tragic suicide of bullied gay teen Kenneth Weishuhn Jr. of Primghar, Ia., followed by numerous other flashpoints — from bullied bus monitor Karen Klein in upstate New York to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad‘s Bullying Prevention Summit in November in Des Moines.
