20-year-old receives Courageous Love award from Unitarian Universalist Society
Zach Wahls’ speech on marriage equality before the Iowa House of Representatives has brought on a storm of praise and fame. The video went viral, picking up millions of hits on YouTube, prompting a flurry of TV appearances and — this week — even a book.
But it didn’t really come full circle for the 20-year-old until Sunday, as he sat in the same church he did as a little boy. The Unitarian Universalist Society, 10 S. Gilbert St., took time out of its two Sunday morning services to present the Iowa City native with its inaugural Courageous Love award.
For Wahls, he said it meant a lot to be recognized by the very people he looked up to growing up.
The inspiration for the award, which had never been presented from the Iowa City congregation before, was Wahls himself, said Sally Hartman, vice president of the Board of Directors.
