I am incredibly excited about the opportunity afforded me by the Starr Fellowship. The Gay Nebraska Youth Network is something about which I am incredibly passionate. Watching the group grow since I created it in 2010 has taught me so much, and I am thankful for the opportunity to ensure its future success.
I have ambitious plans for the Gay Nebraska Youth Network this summer!
The first major task is to institutionalize and structure the group in a way which makes leadership succession as efficient as possible. I will work with my current and past co-leaders to identify which group activities and directions have been most successful, which should continue, and which should be emphasized in the future. Once this process has yielded a fairly coherent model, I will begin the search for a new leadership team for the group.
My current co-leader Eric and I have identified a few very promising individuals in the Gay Nebraska Youth Network. We will do an open application process, but will definitely encourage these people to apply. Once elected, we will bring them on board to help envision the future of the group based upon the work the past leaders have already done. They will take on progressively more responsibilities as the Fall draws closer, until they alone are responsible for the group. Eric and I will remain active members of the group, but we believe that the time is coming for us to pass the torch to a younger generation. We have learned so much and met so many people through our roles as leaders of the GNYN, and we want others to have these experiences.
