A University of Iowa group is criticizing the UI College Republicans' use of the term "coming out" for the group's annual "Conservative Coming Out Week."
The University of Iowa Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allied Union said in a news release said it is critical of any use of the term "coming out" for an event that doesn't involve identifying with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or allied community.
This week is indeed Conservative Coming Out Week, an annual event held by the UI College Republicans as a means to recruit new members and to encourage political conservatives to identify themselves despite living in a left-leaning enclave such as Johnson County. Events are scheduled throughout the week.
