DES MOINES — Gay rights advocates delivered more than 8,400 petition signatures to the Iowa Department of Public Health office in Des Moines on Wednesday [March 28, 2012] on behalf of a lesbian couple from Davenport who have sued to get both of their names included on their stillborn child’s death certificate.
Jessica and Jennifer Buntemeyer were married in October 2010 after the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples could legally be married in the state.
Jessica conceived a son using in vitro fertilization, but the boy, Brayden, was stillborn.
The couple filed for a death certificate filling in Jessica as the mother and Jenny as the father, but a worker at the Department of Public Health erased Jenny from the certificate when the official copy was issued.
