Councilman Keith Radig proposed in an email to his colleagues that the city's Human Rights Commission cut its ties to a state group he claims supports legalizing gay marriage.
In the Feb. 7 email to his fellow City Council members and the city Finance Department regarding budget cuts, Radig wrote that "memberships" were a minor expense but "that doesn't mean that they should stay in. Especially when some of the organizations are politically charged." The message asks Budget/Financial Manager Donna Forker for "the reports you have on them."
"Human rights, these memberships must be cut," the email continues. "Do you think that the other segment of our population would be OK that we funded organizations that lobby to ban gay marriage? Then why is it OK to fund organizations that lobby to ban bans on gay marriage?"
