The observations and suggested remedies described in the Jan. 15 Kathie Obradovich column, “About That Gender Gap for the GOP…” unfortunately failed to include a key contributor to increasing defection of women from participation in the Republican Party.
During the past year, women have witnessed a rampage conducted against them by Republicans. It started last March, when the Republican controlled House of Representatives threatened to shut down the entire federal government unless financial support for birth control, and specifically Planned Parenthood, was eliminated.
Once elected, new Republican majorities and governors in states like New Jersey and Wisconsin, promptly closed women’s health centers displacing tens of thousands of low income patients. Last year in the Iowa House, Republicans led a charge to restrict both contraception and abortion, and some have pledged to continue the same attack this year.
