Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann rolled up to Iowa City’s Hamburg Inn No. 2 on Thursday afternoon to cheers from supporters, chants from hecklers and protests from a gay robot professor.
The U.S. Representative from Minnesota made a quick pass through the restaurant as part of her 99-county tour in the lead-up to the Iowa Caucuses on Jan. 3.
About 20 members of the Occupy Iowa City movement disrupted Bachmann’s visit, chanting phrases such as, “She’s all about families unless they need health care cause if they can’t afford it, then they’re completely screwed,” and “Michele Bachmann does not stand with the working people of the land. She’ll sell us out to her corporate friends in a box of religion — this madness has to end! You’re not wanted here so go, just go.”
Campaign officials turned up background holiday music to try to drown out the hecklers as Bachmann made her way through the packed restaurant.
