New Perry TV ad cites ‘liberal attacks’ on religion (DesMoinesRegister)

In a new ad that will air in Iowa, Rick Perry focuses on gays and prayers and says he would stop “liberal attacks” on religion if elected president.

Civil rights advocates immediately criticized the ad as an attack on gays.

The Texas governor says in the 30-second TV spot: “You don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.

“As president, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.”

The new religion ad, called “Strong,” will run in rotation with Perry’s “Energy Jobs” ad in Iowa, campaign aides said.

Troy Price, executive director of the civil rights group One Iowa, on Wednesday called the new ad “a desperate attempt to salvage a flailing campaign.”
