In an interview with ToucheMag.com, Dyer discussed his motivations for this initiative, and said, “Once this petition takes off—win or lose—[it] will start a chain reaction.  It will continue to push for social reform in our conservative state.”

Section 29 of the Nebraska state constitution was added by a state ballot initiative in 2000, and reads:

Marriage; Same-Sex Relationships Not Valid or Recognized

“Only marriage between a man and a woman shall be valid or recognized in Nebraska. The uniting of two persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar same-sex relationship shall not be valid or recognized in Nebraska.”

The new initiative needs nearly 113,000 signatures in order to be added to the 2012 ballot.
For those who would like to assist, contact Chris Dyer at Facebook.com/Chrisdyer02, email chrisdyer02 [at] gmail.com, or call (402) 570-7631.  Help is needed finding financial supporters and signers, but also volunteers to be circulators who can travel or have extra time.
