The city of Des Moines has banned discrimination based on gender identity.
Members of the Des Moines City Council voted 6-1 Monday to add the protection to the municipal code, making Des Moines the ninth Iowa city to do so.
Councilman Halley Griess voted no.
A law passed by state legislators in 2007 prohibits discrimination based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity on matters of employment, housing, education, public accommodation and credit practices.
