Two high-profile political events in Des Moines attracted protesters on Saturday evening.
The Thanksgiving Family Forum featuring six Republican presidential candidates and the Iowa Democratic Party’s annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner both drew demonstrators from the Occupy Wall Street movement.
The forum also attracted activists promoting conservative social issues, along with counterprotesters.
On the streets in northwest Des Moines surrounding First Federated Church, site of the GOP forum, representatives from Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers and American Atheists gathered with signs. Their goal was to register their concern about the entanglement of government and religion.
