November 6th – 13th, 2011
The University of Iowa’s student & community-based group TransCollaborations today announced the schedule for the third annual TransWeek. This year’s line-up of educational and outreach events will include film screenings, poetry, dancing, workshops, collaborative art projects, and discussions that explore and deconstruct gender, in its many forms.
TransWeek provides excellent opportunities for our academic and cultural communities to be more inclusive of all gender identities. Too often, the transgender community is expected to “take care of our own” as we frequently experience barriers to accessing resources and thus, must rely on our internal community to take care of each other. We seek to host programs and events this year that reaches out to other oppressed and under-represented groups AND challenges everyone to grapple with intersectional forms of oppression.
Given the enormous success of the first and second annual TransWeek, this year’s event promises to enliven our campus and community conversations about what it means to be inclusive of all genders, add to an ongoing dialogue about how other aspects of identity interact with gender, and more broadly - how gender affects us all.
