13 years ago this week the death of a gay college student named Matthew Shepard captured the attention of the world.
Movies were even made based on the story of his brutal death.
After leaving a bar with, who he thought were two other gay men, he was driven to a remote field, tied to a fence, robbed and beaten and left for dead in the freezing cold.
It was a watershed moment in our nation's history that led to the creation of laws against hate crimes.
