Defense Directive 1304.26 — the military policy known as “don’t ask, don’t tell” — ended at midnight.
The repeal of the 1993 policy that prohibited gays from serving openly in the armed services has brought mixed reactions from Americans, ranging from worry to indifference.
But for three former Iowa service members who kept parts of their lives secret under the policy and its harsher predecessors, the change brings both a sigh of relief and a hopeful face toward the future.
