The Family Research Council's Values Voters Bus Tour brought pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-family, conservative Republican activists -- including presidential candidate Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, R-Mich. -- to the Floyd Monument in Sioux City on Thursday morning. It was the 14th stop on a four-day, 21-stop tour leading up to Saturday's Iowa Straw Poll in Ames.
McCotter told the crowd, a mix of several dozen party faithful and undecided voters, that people like to pretend there is a divide between social and economic conservatives.
"But we understand we can only have a prosperous economy if we have a virtuous citizenry," he said.
He called for a return to the principles of former presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan that favored self-government and liberty, adding that it is wrong to "prop up the (current) welfare manner of government." He called for strengthening the economy through tax relief, regulatory relief and policy changes.
