On screen, and thus in canon, there has never been a lesbian or gay character in Star Trek. While there had been some speculation that such an occurrence would or could happen with Star Trek: Enterprise, that never came to be. Instead, the LGBT fans of Star Trek were left hanging. Perhaps that wait is coming to an end. Recently, AfterElton talked to J.J. Abrams, the force behind the reboot of Star Trek.
Star Trek has always prided itself on the vision of tolerance and inclusiveness, and while there has been a lesbian kiss between Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Rejoined”, there has not been any real lesbian or gay characters in franchise. This was something that former Trek writer and producer Brannon Braga felt was rather wrong.
But, as AfterElton points out:
Braga’s regret notwithstanding, since he’s no longer involved with either a proposed new series or the next Star Trek film, he’s not in a position to rectify what is inarguably the worst stain on Star Trek’s reputation.
