
Surrounded by wood-paneled walls covered with photos of John Wayne, presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke in a cafe in Winterset on Saturday, the sometimes forgotten home of one legendary Iowan known as the Duke.
“It’s good to be here in Winterset – the real home of John Wayne,” Santorum said, in a not-so-subtle nod to U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., who confused the town with Waterloo last month. “That’s all I’m going to say about that.”
The Santorum family was on day five of its 18-day, 50-city tour across central Iowa leading up to the Ames straw poll, an early test of campaign strength, on Aug. 13.
Friday though, Santorum broke away from the family to speak at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver, Colo., where he denounced New York’s legalization of gay marriage, a matter he said shouldn’t be left to states.
