Kate Baker and Ming Linsley wanted to come to Vermont to have a wonderful wedding, and they, somehow, managed to get one of the only inns in the state that is going to refuse business from a lesbian couple. Not only are most inns here willing to host wedding receptions for lesbian and gay couples, but the law is such that these inns cannot refuse to accommodate same-sex couples. The Public Accommodations law means that any business that is not associated directly with a religion or headed up by the clergy cannot discriminate.
The Wildflower Inn in Lyndonville, though, turned aside the couple, and apparently two other couples, because the inn’s owners, who are devout Catholics, have said that they have a “no-gay-reception-policy.” However, innkeepers Jim and Mary O’Reilly have said that they never spoke with the couple directly and that their events coordinator handled the issue improperly. They did release a statement saying “We have never refused rooms or dining or employment to gays or lesbians… We do not however, feel that we can offer our personal services wholeheartedly to celebrate the marriage between same sex couples because it goes against everything that we as Catholics believe in.”
