Recently, New York became the sixth state to legalize gay marriage, along with Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Iowa.
Iowa? Yes, even corn-loving Iowa has now legalized gay marriage. Wisconsin has not, although we have limited rights for same-sex couples. Wisconsin does not issue marriage licenses to gay people. Not yet, anyway.
New York is interesting for the fact that its state legislature is controlled by Republicans. It's the first time that a Republican-dominated legislature has approved gay marriage. Perhaps the Republicans in New York are a bit more forward-thinking that the Republicans in Wisconsin.
Right here in our own backyard, we recently witnessed the drama of a lesbian Methodist pastor in a church trial for performing a same-sex union in 2009. Peace United Methodist Church in Kaukauna hosted the trial of Rev. Amy DeLong.
