Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Al Ringgenberg has been chosen by the Pottawattamie County Republican Central Committee to challenge Sen. Michael Gronstal, a Council Bluffs Democrat, in the November 2012 general election.
Gronstal is the Iowa Senate’s majority leader and has become a lightning rod for criticism by Republicans for his support of same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
The Pottawattamie County GOP committe issued a statement saying that Ringgenberg received its support to oppose Gronstal as result of a candidate forum on Monday.
