Midwest ministers apologize to gay community in proclamation (Layman)

Calling their statement “Good News,” a group of Midwest-based clergy has declared “the debate is over” and that “homosexuality is not a sickness, not a choice, and not a sin.”

Dubbed the Heartland Proclamation, the statement, released June 15 by a group of 263 ministers, calls for “full inclusion of [gay] brothers and sisters in all areas of church life, including leadership” and offers an apology to the gay community for what the group calls a failure by the Church to reach out to them.


“We find no rational Biblical or theological basis to condemn or deny the rights of any person based on sexual orientation,” the statement reads.

It has been signed by ministers from several denominations, including the United Church of Christ, the United Methodist Church and several Episcopalian and Lutheran ministers.
