Troy Price, Executive Director of One Iowa, issued the following statement this evening on the passage of legislation in New York making that state the sixth in the nation to pass marriage equality.

“On behalf of our more than 40,000 members, we at One Iowa wish to extend our wholehearted congratulations to the gay and lesbian couples in New York who will now be recognized in the eyes of their government.  This is an historic day for New Yorkers and for our country.  But more importantly, this is a day of joy and hope for the loving, committed couples who fought so hard to see this day. We join with them, and their families, friends, and allies, in celebration.

“While we celebrate, we must not forget this battle is far from over. In states like Iowa, we have seen how hard some groups who do not believe in equality for all citizens will work to take away the rights we've worked so hard to secure.  And in 44 other states, loving, committed gay and lesbian couples are still denied the freedom to marry the person they love.  One Iowa will continue to stand up to those who wish to take away the rights of our citizens, and ensure Iowa remains a place where everyone enjoys the freedom they deserve.”

“Congratulations to the people of New York.  We welcome you to the now SIX states and D.C. recognizing marriage equality, and are proud to have you join with us as pioneers in the fight for equality.”
