
A new study has concluded that disclosing one's sexual orientation leads to several psychological benefits, but this is possible only in supportive environments.
The researchers advocate coming out as a lesbian, gay or bisexual could aid in reducing anger, depression and improving self-esteem.
"In general, research shows that coming out is a good thing," said Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester.
"Decades of studies have found that openness allows gay people to develop an authentic sense of themselves and to cultivate a positive minority sexual identity," he added.
