Families cherish time to bond, enjoy together
Joe Bell said his father played an important role in his life, and now he wants to do the same for his 9-year-old daughter, Kiera Bell, and other children as chairman of Lucas Elementary's Dads Engaged in Engineering Dreams.
"My dad was very important in my life," he said. "I can't imagine some of these kids (without a father). I try to work with some of these kids."
Bell, who also has a stepdaughter, Alicia Sandoval, with his wife, Karla, is among the 70.1 million fathers in the United States and among the 25.3 million fathers who are part of married couples with children younger than 18, according to the 2010 Census. They are among a group that will celebrate Father's Day today but are considered a shrinking group as more children are in homes without a father around.
