Some believe there is a persistent stigma in Iowa that keeps members of the LGBT community from seeking health care. They might have issues with insurance coverage, or they don't want to be "outed" by going to the doctor.


As part of an effort to provide medical services to this facet of the state's population, Dr. Joe Freund has joined the staff of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. He says skipping routine health screenings is not uncommon.

"Especially for Lesbians, one of the things is that they may not get is the routine screenings, the pap smears that others do, because they may not seek medical attention for things like birth control."
