With the leader of the anti-gay-marriage movement in Iowa standing at his side, retired Georgia businessman Herman Cain said today he’d be willing to hire an openly gay staffer to work in his administration if elected president.
Cain wove several references to God into his speech to 140 Pella-area conservatives, saying that laws come from God and that “the Biblical purpose for government is to punish evil and encourage good.” He later quoted the book of Matthew.
When a blogger asked Cain after the speech, hosted by the conservative advocacy group the Family Leader, if he’d be opposed to appointing someone who is gay but qualified for a White House position, Cain had an immediate and breezy answer.
“Nope, not at all. I wouldn’t have a problem with that at all,” he said with stragglers from the crowd listening in and Bob Vander Plaats, the president of the Family Leader, standing next to him.
