
A crisis is brewing in America that reaches most of us in some way, but those who track it say it's so politically touchy, neither party will tackle it.
It doesn't involve abortion, immigration, gay rights or any of the usual hot-button issues. But if you want to see candidates clam up, ask how they would tackle what one expert calls American men's "failure to launch."
Unemployed at record rates, falling behind academically, socially and in earning power, American men are at a difficult crossroads.
"Men's identity is tied up in the work we do," says Tom Mortenson of Oskaloosa, a national expert with the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education. "If they are not working -- especially if they aren't educated -- they're more apt to be committing suicide, going to prison, and not getting married or having children."
