The first civil union licenses were issued Wednesday in Illinois after couples gathered overnight to be the first ones in line.
For many, getting the license is a special emotional moment they have been waiting on for several years.
Because of the civil union license, Lakeesha Harris and Janean Watkins now have many of the same rights as married couples in the state of Illinois. They can share the same last name or a hyphenated name, have hospital visitation rights and legally be recognized as a couple in Illinois.
