May 13th marks the first Cedar Rapids performance for Des Moines based singer-songwriter Mary McAdams.  Acoustic music fans can catch Mary at a show held at the Faith United Methodist Church from 7-9 PM on May 13th. Suggested donation is $10.

McAdams is an award-winning singer-songwriter; accomplishments include being 2010 Regional Finalist in the prestigious Mountain Stage NewSong songwriting competition; second place in the 2010 Snowbird Mountain Music Festival Songwriter competition and Regional Finalist in the 2010 Lilith Fair Local Talent Search.  McAdams was also invited to play the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Official Showcase in Park City, UT.

McAdams brings a mother’s love and a lover’s passion to the 10 original compositions on her Iowa-released CD.  Mary can serve up a slow and saucy roadhouse blues, earnest Americana roots rockin’ or a lullaby balled with equal authenticity.  From the funky piano fills of “Greed” to the simple guitar picking of “Fourth of July” –you’ll fall in love with the subjects in Mary’s songs.

McAdams has been performing around Des Moines for 8 years and is the host of Ritual Café’s monthly open mic night. She also teaches songwriting to grades K-8. When she performs live, Mary offers a menu that runs from soft folk music to saucy blues. “As a mom, a wife, a songwriting instructor and even as a citizen of this big messy country, I think there’s a world of inspiration in the people that surround me,” said McAdams. “Whether it’s from a newspaper headline about some corporate meltdown or just listening in on fellow parents concerns, songs are waiting to be written.”

Mary’s voice on her self-titled debut is honest, unapologetically strong and downright ROCKIN’. The writing is full of imagery as she gives us a refreshing look at magic in, "Bubbles". "As the cities and towns are in trouble, the kids will find the magic...mixing a nickel's worth of soap and a cup of rain".  Makes you believe in magic all over again.
