
April is “Get Yourself Tested” month. The nationwide campaign aims to cut the number of STD’s nationwide, especially among young adults.
Across the country, STD infection rates for 19 to 24-year-olds are up 5 percent since last year. From 2009, to 2010, Chlamydia rates went up 1percent. Gonorrhea rates however, dropped 14 percent.
There’s a definite concern that young people are accounting for more cases. 15 to 24-year-olds, make up one-third of all confirmed STD cases in Linn County.
“80 percent of people who have STDs are not even aware that they have them,” said Campus Health nurse Kim Pritts.
