Chanting “Let us vote. Let us vote,” about 500 supporters of an Iowa constitutional amendment to ban same gender marriage rallied today at the Iowa Capitol.
Inside the Capitol rotunda, about 60 supporters of gay marriage quietly lobbied members of the Iowa Legislature. The urged lawmakers to stand firm in support of the Iowa Supreme Court’s decision legalizing marriage equality for all people, emphasizing their view that discrimination shouldn’t be written into the Iowa Constitution.
The Republican-led Iowa House has approved House Joint Resolution 6, authorizing a statewide vote on the marriage amendment. But it has stalled in the Democrat-led Senate, where Majority Leader Michael Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, has vowed to block such a measure on grounds it would be writing discrimination into Iowa’s Constitution. Activists on both sides of the issued pushed hard today in support of their stances.
