Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie today signed legislation granting same-sex couples in civil unions the rights and responsibilities afforded to Hawaii’s married couples under state law.

Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

"This marks an important victory for loving, committed couples who want nothing more than the rights and security afforded other families. While not a substitute for full legal marriage, this law provides fundamental protections and responsibilities to better ensure same-sex couples are able to take care of each other and their families. We congratulate Equality Hawaii on this victory, as well as all those who advocated for and supported this measure. This new law will have a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands of Hawaiians."
