New group seeks to diversify faith discussion on judiciary, gay marriage (IowaIndependent)
Religion in Iowa is multi-faceted, and, according to a group that met for the first time in Linn County Monday night, it is well past time for all voices of faith to have an active seat at the table during discussions about the Iowa Judicial Branch and marriage equality.
“One of our concerns is that Bob Vander Plaats and his crowd are trying to impose a very singular Christian view on the entire state,” said Libby Slappey, a member of the congregation at Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids where the initial public meeting was held. “So, when we first came together and began discussing the creation of this group, we recognized that this was about religious freedom — and that can also include freedom from religion.
“We are here because we want Iowa to be a welcoming place for all, and we don’t want Bob Vander Plaats telling the rest of the world that we are of one certain persuasion.”
