Plan to 'protect' marriage fails civil rights test (THOnline)

Opponents of gay marriage in Iowa are obviously feeling their oats after ousting three of the state Supreme Court justices who issued a unanimous ruling legalizing it. Not only do they want to undo the court's ruling, so that they might "protect" marriage, they want to take it further. Too much further.

Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal is blocking a vote on a resolution, passed last week in the House, toward a statewide referendum on same-sex marriage. His political maneuvering might anger some, but he's right regarding the issue.

In their zeal to "protect" marriage, the authors of the resolution wrote, "Marriage between one man and one woman shall be the only legal union valid or recognized in this state." That language bars the state from recognizing even civil unions or domestic partnerships.

That's just wrong.
