Instead of focusing on the economy and jobs, Iowa Republicans are instead trying to change the state’s constitution to take away marriage rights from same-sex couples, Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal (D-Council Bluffs) said Thursday in a statement.
“It’s clearer than ever that Republicans will stop at nothing to take away the constitutional rights of Iowans,” he said. “I hope that Republicans will join our efforts and focus their energy on helping Iowans recover from the worst national recession since World War II.”
The statement was released shortly after the Senate voted down party lines to amend the rules of the chamber to, as Gronstal described it, “put into the rules what has been the tradition and practice in the Senate – under Republican and Democratic majorities – for more than four decades.”
