The Mr. Gay World USA competition is underway for the first time in the history of Mr. Gay World, taking place solely via social media. Mr. Gay World is essentially a “beauty contest” for gay men to participate and represent their nation, as well as make a powerful statement for human rights.
“Mr. Gay World has become an annual staple for the gay community, world-wide, and it’s time that the US steps up and takes part,” commented Jarl Haugedal, founder of Mr. Gay World USA.
In order to make sure that Mr. Gay World USA is selected in time to fly to Manila for Mr. Gay World in March, a social media campaign is underway to allow everyone who is a qualified candidate and interested the opportunity, to nominate themselves and be given equal opportunity to compete.
Any gay man, 18 and older, who is a resident of the United States is encouraged to submit to become the 2011 Mr. Gay World USA and fly to the Philippines to compete in the world competition. Submissions are being accepted in the form of three minute video interviews, where candidates must relay the following information: name; age; location; story of when he came out; why he would be the best representative of Mr. Gay World USA; how he uses or plan to use his "gay for good".
From there the videos will be posted on the Mr. Gay World USA Facebook community page, where voting is open to the public. The top five entries with the most ‘likes’, along with another five individuals who are selected by the judge panel, will make it to the interview round of the competition. From there one lucky individual will be named the official 2011 Mr. Gay World USA and flown to Manila to compete.
“We hope that hosting the first annual competition as a social media campaign will help make it possible for more men to enter, as well as spread the word further about how we’re encouraging ‘gay for good’,” commented Haugedal.
