Branstad: No judicial litmus test (DesMoinesRegister)
Gov. Terry Branstad will quiz nine finalists for the Iowa Supreme Court about their legal experience and philosophy but won't ask about specific cases, including the court's controversial 2009 decision to permit same-sex marriage.
The new governor says he will look for justices who will "restore credibility to the judicial branch" as he considers who should fill the three vacant high court seats.
Branstad, a Republican, told The Des Moines Register in an interview last week that he never asked potential judges about their views on specific cases during his prior terms as governor, and has no plans to do so now.
