Anti-Gay Housing Issues Addressed By HUD Today (Fenuxe)
U.S. Housing and Urban Development officials spoke to select members of the gay media today to announce new proposed regulations to ensure equal access to housing regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen evidence that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and families are being arbitrarily excluded from some housing opportunities,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.
The proposed regulations would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of definitions protected from discrimination applicable to HUD programs, it would prohibit inquires about one’s sexual orientation or gender identity, and make clear that sexual orientation and gender identity cannot be a factor when pursuing an FHA-insured mortgage. The FHA represents one-third of all new mortgages in the U.S.
