
The first major legislation proposed by Iowa House Republicans after capturing a 60-40 majority would cut education substantially, including $10 million cut from Regents universities during the current fiscal year. But that’s only on the surface, as the analysis from the non-partisan Legislative Services Agency notes Iowa’s public universities could lose out on $8.1 million as a result of a proposed 18 month halt on sabbaticals.
Iowa State University Staff Research Economist Dave Swenson said he could find no other word for it than “bizarre spite” for what is being proposed to be cut from universities.
“The core and heart of university is a library and you’re going to cut its acquisitions, and it just bespeaks of complete ignorance of the role and function of a library to a world class institution,” Swenson said.
