
Some politicians just aren't heeding all the pleas for civility in politics. Or even sanity in politics. Like state Rep. Larry Brown of Kernersville, who this week said that the government shouldn't spend money to treat HIV among adults "living in perverted lifestyles."
During a discussion of his legislative goals for the year, Brown told the Journal's Wesley Young and Travis Fain that the government shouldn't fund programs for adults with HIV who "caused it by the way they live."
Brown's ignorant bigotry would be laughable were it not for the fact that if all elected officials thought that way, we'd have countless more AIDS cases in this country. Brown's remarks are "fiscally and socially irresponsible," said Katherine Foster, the head of AIDS Care Service in Winston-Salem, and they "highlight his ignorance on this major public-health issue."
