This morning at the Iowa Statehouse, Interim Chief Justice Mark Cady delivered the annual State of the Judiciary. Cady is the author of the Varnum v. Brien ruling that recognized the freedom to marry in Iowa. He used the address to defend the decision and address the political attacks on the court from anti-equality extremists.
“I want to thank Justice Cady for his passionate defense of an Iowa justice system that continues to serve all Iowans well,” said One Iowa Executive Director Carolyn Jenison. “The courts continue to champion equal rights for all Iowans, a tradition that has made Iowa a national leader in protecting the liberties of all its citizens. The address was an excellent lesson in civics and a reminder that our courts work best when politics are put aside.”
One Iowa is the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, committed to full equality for LGBT individuals, including the freedom to marry.
