
One Iowa, the largest LGBT rights advocacy group in the state, is planning a massive lobbying day as soon as the legislature begins its 2011 session. The group is aiming to gather 500 volunteers to show up on Tuesday, Jan. 11, to speak with legislators and staff around the Capitol in Des Moines.
Freshman Republicans are already laying out plans to impeach the remaining four state Supreme Court justices who were not on the ballot in November, when the other three were ousted in a retention vote. Speaker-elect Kraig Paulsen has said he would not stand in the way if that was brought to a vote.
Gov.-elect Terry Branstad declined to comment on the potential impeachment earlier this week. He has said he believes a vote to define marriage in Iowa’s constitution should not be blocked by Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, whom he likened to a “dictator” for his refusal to allow such a vote to take place.
